Search engines like Google send out "crawlers" to look for new websites to add to their index. Indexing a website ensures that Google will be able to find it when someone searches for relevant keywords. Google (and other search engines) are constantly crawling websites so it's more than likely that soon after you've connected your domain name and started sharing links on social media, your site will be found and indexed with no action from you.

If you think your site isn't on Google, you can do a test by using the site: search tool. If you see results, you're in the index! For example:

If your site isn't on Google

Although Google crawls billions of pages, it's not possible that they index every single one. If your website was missed it's usually because it's too new and the crawlers just haven't found it yet.

The first thing to do is ensure that you have not hidden your website from search engines. To do this:

1. Go to the Publish page

2. Ensure "Make my site visible to search engines" is toggled to ON.

If you have a paid subscription to Envato Sites and a custom domain name connected to your website, double check that your domain name is correctly connected.

If your CNAME and redirect records are correct, you can manually add your website to Google's index by submitting your URL here:

If your website has still not been indexed

Google don't guarantee that by manually submitting your URL your website will be added to their index. The main reasons Google would skips adding your website to their index is because your website is difficult to crawl or it's too isolated (there are no incoming links).

The good news is that all of the templates offered on Envato Sites are easy for Google to crawl as they have been designed for SEO. This means that your site has a simple, easy to navigate format.

To assist Google's crawlers:

  • Ensure there is a link to each page included in your website's Header navigation
  • Share links to your page on social media. Now is a great time to ask friends and family to visit your site and provide feedback!
