It’s crucial that visitors can see what your business does within the first few seconds of opening your site. If your homepage is vague, bland or confusing your potential customers will give up and move on.
Above all, make sure that crucial information and your more important "Call to Action" button are "above the fold" - visible at the top of the page without making the visitor scroll down.
With that principle in mind and the checklist below, your cat set up your homepage to help customers find and engage with your content — and that’s the key to driving results.
Here are the four must-have elements every homepage needs:
- A clear description of who you are, what you offer and how your products/services benefit the visitor. Add your logo and use high quality images to visually reinforce your message
- Add one or two clear Calls to Action (CTAs) like “Join today” or “Call now”. Add a CTA needs to be near to the top of the site so that it is visible without scrolling. It’s also a good idea to add a second CTA towards the bottom of the page.
- Display your contact information where a visitor will expect to find it — in your Header or Footer blocks. You could also add a live chat widgetto give customers an easy way to get in touch
- Clear site Navigation links at the head of the page. Arrange the links in the order that a customer will need the information, Eg. “Home”, “About”, “Services”, “Pricing” then “Contact”
Ensure the page “flows” and is easy to navigate. There’s a fine line between enabling visitors to find all the information they need without clicking through multiple links, and overwhelming visitors with one very long page with too much information. Keep in mind that not all visitors will be viewing your site on a large screen so your homepage layout needs to be carefully considered.
