SEO isn’t all about words on a page. You also need to think about your images and what they say about your website.

The page the image is on and the content around the image (including any captions or image titles) provide search engines with information about the topic of your image. If your image name is unrelated to the content around it, you risk confusing search engines and causing them to pass over your website.

You can reinforce the message of your content and help search engines by providing image alt text which is simply a description about what's shown in the image.

Alt text is also important for the vision-impaired as screen readers read out the text to make the image accessible!

Adding image alt text

  1. Click on any block containing a foreground image to open the Edit Toolbar
  2. Expand the toolbar to locate the image/s in the block

Each image is provided with a field called Image alt text where you can provide a short description.

For the image in the example above, good Image alt text might be something like "Claire with award-winning photography" or "woman holding photo of old lady with grandchild".
